What comes to mind when you hear about Midwives? “Midwife” translates as “with woman”, and there have been midwives since the dawn of time. When it comes to childbirth, midwives have been referred to as “watchful guardians of normal birth.”
At WSNM, our midwives are Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNM) with undergraduate and advance degrees in nursing and midwifery, as well as a broad knowledge in Women’s Health and Obstetrics. Certified nurse-midwives provide prenatal care, deliver babies, and offer gynecology care from the first menstrual cycle through menopause. As a type of advanced practice nurse, a nurse-midwife focuses on education and partnering with women in their health care and in their childbearing. You may schedule all of your routine GYN care with the midwives, including but not limited to annual exams with PAP smear, birth control consults, woman’s wellness and common gynecological problems.
At WSNM, nurse-midwives have been working collaboratively with physicians since 1996, in a team approach that ensures that women are linked up with the appropriate or desired level of care. We pride ourselves on our long history of success together. We value clear lines of communication between midwife and physician in the care of our patients that include following guidelines for consultation, shared care, and transfer of care, and a culture of respect for the variety of our approaches and skillsets for providing care to our individual patients. In OB, our common goal of healthy mothers and babies shines through alongside with the approach of protecting the normalcy of birth.
Our goal is to provide competent, compassionate care that empowers our patients and allows us to assist them in the childbirth experience that they choose, while maintaining and upholding established medical standards and protocols. Assisting families at this special time is our privilege and a true labor of love.
